Alternatives To The “Knockout” Roses

I photographed these three roses in a Green Hills garden today. Two are Hybrid Musk roses and one is a Polyantha. All are graceful shrubs, and the Hybrid Musks have colorful hips from their spring bloom alongside their late summer blossoms. How elegant they are in contrast to the stodgy and work-a-day “Knockout” series which are now overplanted in masses . Here is “Buff Beauty”, a Hybrid Musk-

And the Polyantha “Caldwell Pink”, also known as “Pink Pet”

It is a shame we now have only one rose marching monotonously across our landscapes. We have traded elegance and form for “no care”, and our gardens are not the better for it.
